Julia Olanders

The Betweenness Collection is a series of bodily vessels made out of building materials, as a comment on our industries and the toxic waste that derives from it. Hard materials such as plaster, concrete, and insulation foam are mixed to create soft shapes resembling that of a bust from an ancient lost civilisation. The vessels are meant as an embodiment of two opposites: the beautiful and the ugly, the functional and the decorative, toxicity and the body. They pose the question; if we think of buildings as our bodies, should we see them as very sick ones? // Julia Olanders took her bachelor's in Contemporary Jewelry in 2015 at Gerrit Rietveld Academie in Amsterdam, and her master's degree in Design at Konstfack in Stockholm in 2019. She has since then shown her work at a variety of museums and galleries, such as ArkDes in Stockholm, Super House in New York, and most recently a series of lamps at the London Design Festival 2021, through the Danish design platform Adorno Design.
